The International Award for Young People

World Math Day 2008

BIS student have been working hard over the past few weeks competing against students from around the world in Internet based arithmetic tests. Students calculated over 164000 before the event, and over 34500 on 5 March (World Math Day) itself.

As the World Math Day was on 5 March, during our Half-term holiday we had our own in-school competition based upon the most correct answers in the two weeks preceding 5 March.

In total over this period BIS students eagerly answered an amazing 164035 arithmetic questions correctly, with virtually every student (and some teachers) spending time in breaks, lunch and also at home competing against other students from around the world.

BIS trophies were awarded to the most correct answers in each Key Stage; the winners being:
Key Stage 1 – Cameron H – 2111 correct answers
Key Stage 2 – Veysi Berk K – 5270 correct answers
Key Stage 3 – Nikolas B – 16011 correct answers
Key Stage 4 – Philip G – 6845 correct answers
Key Stage 5 – Nikola C – 21396 correct answers

Congratulations to them and all our students who took part.

On World Math Day itself over 20% of BIS students took part in the event, even though the school was closed. In the competition itself over 182 million questions were answered during the time it was 5 March anywhere in the world. BIS students added over 34500 answers to this total. All those who took part were awarded Participation Certificates. Eight of our students also earned Gold Award Certificates for completing over 1000 correct answers during 5 March. Nikola C was our top student answering 10833 questions correctly and was presented with a trophy for his outstanding achievement.

Well done to all those who took part, especially those who went out of their way to compete during their own holiday.

We look forward to participating next year having learnt the ropes and seen how keen and eager students were to compete against their peers around the world. The World Math Day website can be found at www.worldmathday.com.
