The International Award for Young People

Academic Life > Primary School > Overview

At the British International School, we offer a caring and high quality education for the international community of Belgrade in a secure environment on our unique campus.

We have high personal and academic expectations for our students and are proud of the varied and challenging learning opportunities that are provided to our pupils.

Our educational approaches arise out of the best of government and independent education systems, as well as the best practice in international education.

We prepare our international students for UK GCSE, AS and A level examinations (www.cie.org.uk), at age 16 and 18 respectively.

As a result, all of our students are provided with an education that prepares them to enter a schooling system anywhere, as well as to universities in Europe and elsewhere throughout the world.

We prepare and continually review our teaching programmes:
  • to provide the highest possible standards of education in order that our pupils achieve their full potential
  • to take advantage of new developments in technology and prepare pupil for the increasing use of electronic data access and processing
  • to encourage imagination and develop creative talents
  • to keep our materials relevant to the lives of our pupils in a changing world
  • to make pupils aware that all human activity has consequences for the world environment and that personal decisions should be informed by a critical awareness of environmental concerns
  • to encourage pupils to see the difference between fact and opinion
  • to take advantage of our location and wealth of cultures represented by our pupils
  • to provide opportunities and information to enable young people to make choices to maintain health, fitness and social well-being
  • to offer all students equality of opportunity and to provide a curriculum which enables students to become members of a society free from all forms of prejudice and discrimination
  • to help each student develop initiative, independence, a sense of self worth and the confidence to be self critical
  • to encourage the greatest possible success in public examinations and to give students maximum flexibility of career choice for the future
The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) has been developed for 14 to 16 year olds (www.cie.org.uk). It aims to prepare students for further academic success, including progression to A and AS Level study, and equip them with skills for immediate employment. It is equivalent in standard to the British GCSE and is recognised as evidence of ability by academic institutions and employers worldwide. It gives you a wide, varied and balanced programme of study, written with an international audience in mind whose first language may not be English. It provides a balanced mix of practical experience and theoretical knowledge, taking account of differing abilities through a choice between Core and Extended curriculum papers. Students are rewarded for positive achievement – what you know, understand and can do.

AS/A2 Levels (www.cie.org.uk) are one of the most recognised qualifications around the world. They are accepted as proof of academic ability for entry into universities, institutes of higher education and military schools and they are equally important for young people moving into employment. AS levels represent study of half an A level course and have been developed to offer a broader range of subject options to students at that level of academic study. They give real evidence of your ability and level of understanding, having been written with an international audience in mind, whose first language may not be English. Teaching can be placed in a localized context that you will find relevant to your region.

The Senior school is committed to ensuring that each student has the best possible opportunity to achieve his or her potential and that boys and girls have equal access to all aspects of the curriculum. The basic aim of the school's curriculum is to build upon the firm foundation provided through a student’s exposure to their elementary and middle school curriculum by providing a broad and balanced education, which utilises the best educational practice in small teaching groups.
