The International Award for Young People

Academic Life > Secondary School > Overview

At the British International School, we offer a caring and high quality education for the international and local communities of Belgrade in a secure environment on our unique campus. We have high personal and academic expectations for our students and are proud of the varied and challenging learning opportunities that are provided to them. We prepare our students for UK IGCSE, AS and A level examinations, at age 16 and 18 respectively. As a result, all of our students are provided with an education that prepares them to enter a schooling system anywhere, as well as to universities in Europe and elsewhere throughout the world. As an alternative option to the British Curriculum in years 12 and 13 students can choose to follow the American-style curriculum offered by the University of Nebraska Lincoln Independent Study High School, and graduate from BIS with an accredited and internationally recognised American High School Diploma.

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) has been developed for 14 to 16 year olds. It aims to prepare students for further academic success, including progression to AS and A Level study, and equip them with skills for immediate employment. It is equivalent in standard to the British GCSE and is recognised as evidence of ability by academic institutions and employers worldwide. It gives a wide, varied and balanced programme of study, written with an international audience in mind whose first language may not be English. It provides a balanced mix of practical experience and theoretical knowledge, taking account of differing abilities through a choice between Core and Extended curriculum papers. Students are rewarded for positive achievement – what you know, understand and can do.

AS and A Levels are one of the most recognised qualifications in the world. They are accepted as proof of academic ability for entry into universities, institutes of higher education and military schools and they are equally important for young people moving into employment. AS levels represent study of half an A level course and have been developed to offer a broader range of subject options to students at that level of academic study. They give real evidence of your ability and level of understanding, having been written with an international audience in mind, whose first language may not be English. Teaching can be placed in a localised context that you will find relevant to your region.

The University of Nebraska High School Diploma is recognised by all the American and Canadian universities, as well as by Universities in Europe, Asia, etc.

The Secondary school is committed to ensuring that each student has the best possible opportunity to achieve his or her potential and that boys and girls have equal access to all aspects of the curriculum.
